This lake, mountain and glacier
region is world-wide famous for Perito Moreno Glacier, a gigantic
mass of ice covering 258 km2 with 60m-high walls. This glacier debouches
in the Argentino Lake’s Canal de los Témpanos, periodically
closing it, and reaching Magellan’s Peninsula. As this takes
place, a natural ice dam is formed, holding the waters of Rico and
South branches. Water rises several metres over the average level,
and presses against the ice barrier which ending up in a fracture,
giving an overwhelming show. The scenery is wonderful everywhere:
mountains, lakes with icebergs floating on their blue waters, and
clean skies with clouds of fantastic shapes. The best time of the
year is from September to April. However, winter is beautiful and
unique.
El Calafate, "Glaciers’ Capital", is a tourist village
located on the south bank of Argentino Lake. Being the main tourist
centre of this region, it has a modern international airport so
easy access is granted through the year. This pictures
town extends along Avenida Libertador, where its commercial activity
takes place. The small Calafate stream flows down to Argentino Lake,
winding through slopes and fractions and crossing the main avenue
to drain in Redonda Bay, an excellent spot to observe bird species.
El Calafate offers an important range of lodging: from small inns
and youth hostels to comfortable hotels. Several tourist agencies
work there, covering circuits to Los Glaciares National Park, El
Chalten and Río Gallegos, with bus or ship fleets for lake
excursions.
Seasons are markedly important for this nice village. In peak season
(from November to March) it is vital to make reservations in advance,
not only for lodgings but also for excursions, because all services
fully work.
During cold season, El Calafate is calmer: some hotels close until
spring and transportation is reduced to a minimum. |
