At about 216 km from El Calafate,
to the north of Viedma Lake and at the foot of the famous Fitz Roy
Mount , these small village appears, offering a spectacle to our
view and giving the chance to practise outdoor activities, such
as high or low intensity trekking or climbing vertical walls, that
is ideal for the most demanding climbers. At only 37 km stands Lago
del Desierto, where ancient woods, glaciers, and constant streams
–contradicting its name- can be observed. Also known as “Trekking
Capital” , El Chaltén offers a wide range of lodging
services, from the most simple for hitchhikers to excellent hotels
featuring all services for the most demanding tourist.
The economy of this area is fully based on tourism, which grows
year after year in the same way than the operating season.
Local buses work regularly all year long with one or two trips from
and to El Calafate, depending on the time of the year.
El Chalten’s isolated geographical situation does not make
it possible to bring some services, such as on-line connections
to Internet, cellular phoning, or automatic cashiers, all of which
must be considered at the time of travelling.
In short, possible activities in the zone are: trekking, mountain
climbing, camping, horse riding, excursions and others like photography,
climbing courses, flora and fauna observation, fishing, rafting
or visiting tourist “estancias”. |
