Departure from railway station of Salta. We will
pass Alvarado, Rosario de Lerma, Campo Quijano, Quebrada del Toro,
Alisal, Puerta de Tastil, Meseta, Diego de Almagro, Cachinal and
San Antonio de los Cobres stations. The train features ten coaches
hauled by a diesel locomotive and a coach equipped with infirmary
room, a central information cabin, restaurant coach, bar coach,
and seven coaches with first class seats, for 520 passengers. In
order to get higher, it makes two zigzag movements, forwards and
backwards, continuously going up among the spots called Alisal and
Chorrillos. It makes two “curly” movements, one at open
sky with rails within a range of 130 m and a parallel ramp by which
it goes back 750 m and goes forward again. As the hill slope endended,
Engineer Maury built a curved and blind tunnel of 88 m, into which
one end of the train gets, it moves to a third parallel rail and
goes forward again, elevating about 2 or 3 per cent. It passes El
Alisal again, but this time 54 metres higher. The train also “flies”
on 13 viaducts, iron bridges without railings. The excursion takes
fifteen hours and reaches its highest point at Viaducto La Polvorilla,
located at 4200m above sea level. |
